Improving Your Phlebotomy Career with Verified Phlebotomy Certification

If you are in any way interested in phlebotomy, then you are probably already aware of how important a sophisticated education is to the process of entering the phlebotomy profession. What you may not yet know, however, is how equally crucial securing certification can be for launching a successful career as a phlebotomist.

In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics' page for phlebotomists stipulates how many employers specifically search for certified workers when looking to fill a job. Fortunately, many reputable organizations exist who specialize in granting phlebotomists professional approval -- that is, after having submitted them to a rigorous set of exams and other demands.

Many of these organizations can also help to verify your certification professionally for employers to see and acknowledge. (By the way, it's also important to know that any phlebotomists looking to work in the state of California must have earned certification in order to work there.)

National Phlebotomy Association

One of the preeminent organizations for phlebotomists in this country, you could not be faulted for thinking that the NPA's certification ranks among the top. They do not offer an online certification verification system, but instead they issue NPA Certification cards that you can show to employers. Replacement cards are issued on their website for $15.

American Society for Clinical Pathology

The ASCP does provide a verification service for phlebotomy professionals, who simply need to search for their organization's identification on the site in order to begin the process. ASCP certification, the oldest in the country, demands that you have graduated from high school and have completed medical education of some sort (either phlebotomy or nursing) before being allowed to take the tough, lengthy exam.

National Center for Competency Testing

Prepare both your social security number as well as your NCCT ID number, should you like for this particular group to verify your certification status. In order to earn such recognition from the NCCT, you must have completed formal phlebotomist education within the past ten years; doing so within the past six months lets you pay less for the exam fee, as you qualify as a "Student."

American Medical Technologists

AMT certification is unique and desirable because of its international recognition. You can take the examination the moment that you receive the diploma for your phlebotomy education. Their website contains a database of all AMT-certified phlebotomists, but your employer will need an organization ID in order to search it.

American Society for Phlebotomy Technicians

Even if you belong to another organization, the ASPT will welcome you into their esteemed fold. It does, however, offer certification in several unique categories, including arterial blood gas, drug collection specialist, EKG technician, paramedical insurance examiner, and point of care technician. They also have compiled a searchable database of all certified phlebotomy professionals, so you can prove your certified status to employers.
