Scholarships for Phlebotomists
Phlebotomist students and professionals seeking to advance their studies may explore various sources, to obtain funding for educational expenses. Some of the sources that you may wish to explore are outlined below.
American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)
The AAB offers financial aid for phlebotomy students, through the David Birenbaum Scholarship Fund. Selection criteria for the award include community service, financial need and scholastic achievement. Applicants are also required to submit 2 letters in support of their character and must have membership with the AAB. The minimum educational requirement for the award is a high school diploma.
American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Phlebotomy students may apply for financial aid from the AMT, which offers scholarships and awards to students enrolled in an allied health program. Selection criteria for the awards include academic performance, extra-curricular activities, financial need and writing skills. The amount of the award is $500. Each year, 5 scholarships are offered by the AMT. The association also offers an outstanding student award of $250 to a selected student and technical writing awards to students, ranging from $135 to $200, each year.
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
The ASCP plays a vital role in supporting the professional development of medical laboratory professionals. The association offers several scholarships in the amount of $500 to qualified applicants. Students must be enrolled in approved phlebotomy programs.
Approved programs are those that have been accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS); programs that have been approved by individual State Departments of Health Sciences; or programs that meet eligibility requirements established by the ASCP Board of Certification.
Recent graduates may also apply for the awards, provided they have graduated within the last 9 months of the date of filing their application. Selection criteria for the awards include leadership abilities, participation in community activities and professional goals. Students are also required to write an essay in support of their application.
Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP)
The ASAHP scholarship program recognizes students who are performing well in their academic programs and show potential for leadership roles in the allied health professions. Successful applicants are awarded $1,000. Selection criteria for the awards include extracurricular activities, leadership capabilities, service to the community, strong communication skills and unique achievements.
Financial need is not included in the selection criteria. Students must be enrolled in a degree-granting program, in schools that have institutional membership with the ASAHP. Applicants are also required to have completed one term, quarter or semester in their school.
